Property Lanzarote
| Lanzarote is the fourth largest and most northeasterly of the Canary Islands and takes its name from a Signor Lanarotto Malocello, a Genoese sailor who landed on the island in the late 13th century. Measuring only 60km north to south and just 21km at its widest point east to west, the island is known as the Isla de Volcanes (Island of Volcanoes) with no less than 300 cones dotted about its landscape. The barren and sometimes bizarre terrain is strangely beautiful and the importance of the islands volcanic origins was recognised by UNESCO when they declared the whole island a Biosphere Reserve. The island's approach to tourism, largely shaped by César Manrique, the artist who hails from the island, has been carefully monitored and evidence of this is everywhere: there are no billboards lining the roads, for example, and building restrictions are tight, ensuring that the island retains its identity. |
